Accessibility of Beginning Japanese for Professionals: Book 2 Pressbook

Organization of content

• Content is organized under headings and subheadings, which appear in sequential order
• List structures (numbered and unnumbered) are used

Images

• All images contain alternative text
• Images do not rely on color to convey meaning

Multimedia

• All audio files, which are available via PDXScholar and PSU Media Space, have corresponding transcripts, found either throughout the corresponding exercise or at the end of the corresponding chapter. Transcripts can be found as the last Chapter of each Lesson.

Font Size and formatting

• Font size is 12 point or higher for body text
• Font size is 9 point or higher for footnotes and table captions
• Font size can be zoomed to 200%

Known Issues/Potential barriers to accessibility

Tables

• Tables in the Pressbook version of this book have not been evaluated for accessibility, which means header rows/columns and cell padding may be lacking or otherwise inaccessible. For more accessible tables, refer to the free Word and PDF versions of this book.

Font size and formatting

• Formatting may be inconsistent across some sections and chapters, and errors may appear. For more accessible and usable formatting, refer to the PDF and Word versions of this book.
• “Emphasis” style that had been applied in Word may have been lost in this book’s import into Pressbooks, which may lead to font color or style used to convey meaning. Refer to the Word and PDF versions of this book for font and formatting that does not rely on color or style to convey meaning.
• Repeated characters or excessive spaces exist surrounding the hiragana “hints” described below

Hints

• As a book of Japanese language learning, this book contains multiple scripts. Throughout the book, where more complex characters or scripts are used, syllabic hiragana characters appear in the line above as a hint. In the PDF and Word versions of this book, hints appear in smaller point 9 size font, but in this Pressbook, hints appear in the same font size as regular body text. There may be cases in this Pressbook wherein hints do not appear directly over the more complex characters; this may be due to remaining formatting issues.
• PDXScholar acknowledges that these hints, which appear throughout the document, may be confusing for someone using assistive technologies or navigating the document by keyboard. Please be aware that when accessing the book, you will frequently encounter lines of text with just a few syllables of Japanese hiragana. The following example appears in Lesson 0, Chapter 1: Instructor’s Directions. In the first line, the hiragana character “き” lies above the kanji character “聞”:
