In the summer of 2020, twenty Oregon librarians gathered for a “train the trainer” workshop about Transparent Design funded by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant called “Revealing the Library’s Hidden Curriculum.” The workshop was held in three parts in October of 2020 and was led by Melissa Bowles-Terry from Nevada State University. As part of the grant, participants received supplemental learning materials, such as books, handouts, and slides.
Much of the published work available about transparent design focuses on semester or quarter-length courses, rather than the single sessions that are more characteristic of library instruction. This 3-part workshop provided the opportunity for hands-on development of library instructional materials that demonstrated the principles of transparent design. The resulting instructional materials are now hosted in an open access repository at Pacific University.
This repository contains learning objects examples that make use of transparent design with the intention that the repository will grow and be a place for library instructors to find materials.
Following the workshop, participants were required to deliver a mini-workshop about transparent design principles. These mini-workshops received funding for supplies, as well as a stipend for presenters to develop the material and deliver the workshop. We chose to create an asynchronous version through this OER.
We would like to thank Xan Arch and Isaac Gilman for the opportunity to participate in this experience. Thank you for your leadership, patience, and project management skills. Thank you Melissa Bowles-Terry for leading the workshops and being available for follow-up questions, as well as Mary-Ann Winkelmes and the authors of Transparent Design in Higher Education Teaching and Leadership, whose knowledge we built upon in designing this content. Thank you also to our library colleagues for your continued support.
