Camper Care

Camper Care

Black socks, they never get dirty,

The longer you wear them,

The blacker they get,

Sometimes I think about washing them

But something inside me says, “Oh, no, not yet!”

“Not yet! Not yet!”

-Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp Song

Meeting The Campers

Within your group, you will be paired with a particular camper. Sometimes a counselor is paired with two campers; sometimes two counselors are paired with one camper, depending on the needs of the campers in the group. The Counselor Supervisor (CS) and Assistant Counselor Supervisor (ACS) of your group are responsible for making these pairings. Although you will develop a special relationship with the camper you are paired with, you will also get to know all of the other campers in your group well.

You will meet the campers during check-in, on Monday from 12:45 PM–5:00 PM.

Camp Staff

  • The Programs Director and Assistant Programs Director will be onsite and oversee the entire program and all staff, counselors and campers.
  • Two Camp Coordinators (CC).  One will oversee the Program Staff and one will oversee the Groups.
  • The Counselor Supervisor’s (CS) job is to lead your group through the camp activities, teach and support you and the other counselors, and help you meet the needs of the camper you are assigned.
  • The Assistant Counselor Supervisor’s (ACS) job is to assist the CS in all tasks necessary to keep your group “running.” They will run countless errands, handle logistics and training, and support you in your counselor responsibilities.
  • Program Staff members oversee and facilitate the program areas at camp such as adventure, horses, arts and crafts, etc.

As a counselor, you will be assigned to a group. Each group consists of about eight counselors. Each group is trained, supported, and supervised by two staff members, the Counselor Supervisor (CS) and the Assistant Counselor Supervisor (ACS). Approximately eight campers are also assigned to each group.

Our CSs emphasize teamwork and group problem solving. Under their guidance, you will become very close with the counselors in your group, you will watch out for each other, and help each other. Most of our CSs and ACS’s have past experience at MHKC or working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
