Imperfect Subjunctive Conjugation: Regular Verbs

The imperfect subjunctive has two conjugation options. Both conjugations can be used interchangeably. Below are the two regular verb conjugation patterns for the imperfect subjunctive.

Option 1: –ara– / –iera–

amar		comer		vivir
amara yo	amáramos nosotros	comiera yo	comiéramos nosotros	viviera yo	viviéramos nosotros
amaras tú / vos	amarais vosotros	comieras tú / vos	comierais vosotros	vivieras tú / vos	vivierais vosotros
amara usted él, ella	amaran ustedes ellos, ellas	comiera usted él, ella	comieran usted él, ella	viviera usted él, ella	vivieran usted él, ella

Option 2: –ase– / –iese–

amar		comer		vivir
amase yo	amásemos nosotros	comiese yo	comiésemos nosotros	viviese yo	viviésemos nosotros
amases tú / vos	amaseis vosotros	comieses tú / vos	comieseis vosotros	vivieses tú / vos	vivieseis vosotros
amase usted él, ella	amasen ustedes ellos, ellas	comiese usted él, ella	comiesen usted él, ella	viviese usted él, ella	viviesen usted él, ella

One Simple Pattern

There is one simple pattern that all imperfect subjunctive verbs have. You only have to know the root of the verb in preterite indefinite tense of the third-person plural (ustedes, ellos, ellas), and use that same root combined with the above endings of the imperfect subjunctive.
