Lab Session Policies – Expectations
- Both LAB manuals must be brought to each lab in order to attend.
-
- Linux & Vim Exercises Manual
- Class Lab Manual
- Both LAB manuals are graded twice a term!
- This manual is designed for CS162, CS163, and CS202 students
Labs are designed to have students gain hands on experience with the material that has already been learned in a classroom format. The labs are not a replacement for the class but instead provide the hands on time needed to become proficient with the material.
Part of becoming proficient with the material requires frequent use of linux, linux tools, and command-line editors. This manual encourages the use of vim. CS162 students may begin using pico or nano, but by the end of level 1 exercises everyone should be using vim!
Lab sessions will include hands-on computer work, linux exercises, and group activities. Students should perform at least one page of linux and/or vim exercises every lab session. These exercises are not optional!
Linux/Vim Expectations:
- It is expected that students will perform one linux or vim exercise worksheet during EACH lab session.
- Expect the lab assistants to correct your worksheets each day and initial that the work has been completed.
- At the end of the lab, the lab assistants will check-off your work and scan that this has been completed as part of your lab activity for the session.
- Then, practice the commands in the exercises! You may be tested on these at proficiency demos, quizzes, or exams!
- Learn the short cuts and navigational commands that can enhance your linux experience.
- Avoid the use of common pitfalls, such as using the mouse or arrow keys when navigating.
